As we enjoy the first few days of this fresh New Year, we are in the finishing stages of putting together our new Spring Line.  This is an exciting time for us at Sally Spicer Bags, as we are catching our breath after a fabulously busy holiday season, and preparing for our great new Spring Collection.  Along with our new fabrics, we are overjoyed to be introducing some new shapes!  Sally has been envisioning these great additions to our line for a while, and we are so thrilled to see them come to fruition!  Stay posted, as our Collection is due to launch at the end of this month!

22 years ago today, our great city, shook with the might of an earthquake we now refer to as Loma Prieta.  Sally was one of many affected by this natural disaster, and today we spent some time as she remembered the events of that fateful day, and just how she dealt with the tramatic senario of losing all of one’s material possesssions, including the home you live and love in.  Among all else, Sally and her son Hunter lost their sweet cat and companion, Buddy.  Today, we take time to remember all of us who have lost things dear to our hearts, from material possessions to loved ones… losses in all forms.  We are grateful for this memory, because it serves as a reminder of incredible survial and reminds us that loss is as much a part of life as happiness and joy.  We are taking time to remember that in trying situations such as what Sally experienced in 1989, you remember and gain a new appreication and understanding of those things that are truly important to you.

America's Cup!

Yesterday, we had the incredible opportunity to attend a Press Conference with San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee, Event Authority Chief Operations Officer Tom Huston of the America’s Cup Committee, Head of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors David Chiu and Kate Sofis Executive Director of SF Made.  Sally Spicer Bags was chosen as one of 7 local companies and members of SF Made to represent the incredible bevy of goods made here in San Francisco, and to show the America’s Cup team just what our vibrant manufacturing sector has to offer!

San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee and Tom Hudson of the America’s Cup were there to discuss how San Francisco, and its local companies will benefit from this wonderful event!  The America’s Cup is specifically interested in partnering with SF Made and its affiliates to tap into this diverse local community and be a part of such a rich small business scene. You might have seen us on NBC news around 6 last night!  We are told there was a close-up of our Hang-Tag and surveying shot of our fabulous Fall & Winter Collection showings!

These are exciting times for a lot of locals, as we look forward to witnessing and participating in a world-renowned event!  Here’s to local businesses and growing appreciation for supporting those around you!

We lived, loved and studied in a town called Lacoste.  A picturesque quaint town, our home away from home housed a few locals, our school and with its cobblestone streets, no cars!

Studying and working in such a secluded provencal town (while going out to Paris, Aix, Lyon and other destinations for field trips and weekend excursions), had its benefits.  The lazy luxury of an area known for its natural beauty definatley lended a hand, I would often take study break walks through the orchards in the Valley seperating our village from the one across, Bonnieux. Sarah Lawernce School had previously owned some of the buildings for their study abroad program, before our school moved there, so the air of education and history of students was imbued in our little town.

There was a potent mix of the French sophisticated simplitiy of life, the relaxation of the Provencal countryside and the instensity of our program, that also made this place a productive oasis.  In hindsight, this was one of my most accomplished periods of school, the artwork I produced there seems to have some sort of golden aura around it!

As Sally feels about her time spent living abroad, this experience had an infallible effect on many aspects of my life; from my view of fashion and style to the incredible beauty of the most simple things comprising a great experience, from fresh produce to fabulous friends.  It is these things that we are exposed to when travels, and the insight that comes from being in a place different from our homes, that we take from our travels.

The embodiment of French (and European) sophistication is something that we attempt to imbue in all aspects of our business here at Sally Spicer.  From our realtionships with customers to our goods made in our San Francisco studio, we are always working at bringing these experiences and knowledge to our work!

Happy Summer!

With the celebration of America’s Independence came a glorious weekend of that rare San Francisco sun that we love so much this time of year.  We basked in the glow of the summer sun, and meanwhile, the spotlight seems to be on a recent hot-bed of activity and interest; USA Made Products!

SF Made received an incredible honor from President Clinton at the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) America conference in Chicago for their Urban Manufacuring Alliance!

Glowing and radiant upon her return, she espoused so many lively stories, and shared some incredibly surreal pictures, the likes of which we had to post here.  After several days spent camping totally off-the-grid, hours on the illustrious beaches of Baja, and endless cooking, convening and bonding with an incredible group of comrades, Sally topped off her adventures with a surf lesson!

Sally, a impeccably savvy traveler, and an inspiration to many, surely brought this beautiful sunshine and energy from Baja back to SF for us! As we all relish these images, and the vibe they embody, we are grateful for all the natural beauty that surrounds us, the opportunities for adventure, and the company of those we love.

As we begin to get ready for the adventures and the excursions ahead, and look forward to the warm summer days awaiting us, we often think back to adventures we’ve enjoyed and lived in the past.  Our Spring & Summer 2011  Rattan Collection is an ode to these odysseys and more.  Both Sally and I have lived abroad in Europe, and feel it is a formative and quintessential experience; an incredible luxury and gift that greatly altered the direction of our lives.  Sally studied art in Italy around the time these pictures were taken, while I had the opportunity to study textiles in Southern France.

This Collection is a tribute our experiences and fond memories of life in Europe, and the fabrics are thusly named:
- Rattan Calabria
- Rattan Marrakech
- Rattan Cote d’Azur
- Rattan Ibiza

Evocative of the easy sophistication of a European Summer odyssey, we have been drawn to these fabrics since the first time we saw them.  Although the Rattan has been used in previous collections, it was the realization of a dream of Sally’s to have a full Rattan Collection.

We are thrilled with the response this collection has generated, and are astounded at the versatility of the Rattan fabrics, at once Boho Chic and incredibly Classy.

These pictures are abundant with those feelings of summer, of the light air, the thrill of a dervie or random adventure, the flurry of excitement in a new place… they also display that awesome 70′s look making a steady comeback!

Here’s to those anticipations we’ll pack in our bags before our getaways, and the memories we will bring back with us, whether we venture in our home towns or circumnavigate the globe!
